Product Details

Part of the Toosh revival series of shawls created to celebrate the aesthetic feel of Shatoosh . Woven from the finest and softest Grade 'A' cashmere fibres from Ladakh. The Roopwati series of shawls are bright and colourful and made with the younger age group in mind, (Ropwati means charming and beautiful). The design inspiration is 'Lord Hanuman', he is the wisest, strongest and bravest of brave. The needlework uses two colours only, a grey and a gold thread which is very effective in its simplicity and works beautifully with the intricate embroidery.

Wear the pashmina on a special occasion, a formal event or simply to keep warm on a cold winter day. The pashmina would be a cherished heirloom that could be passed down from generation to generation.

The raw pashmina wool was collected from a private herd of Changthani goats owned by Mr Tsering Angchuk in June 2021. The fibres were then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain. This is done by hand as machine carding would break the fibre length.

Hand spinning is a traditional culture in Kashmir done in the homes of skilled masters, where they turn the soft pashmina fibres into incredibly fine yarn of thicknesses ranging from 110 - 140 English count. To make yarn this fine and unbroken would not be possible on a machine without a 'carrier fibre'.

The soft fine yarn was then sent to Srinigar and woven by a skilled craftsman, the fine yarn is slightly more difficult to work with as the fibres are so short making the yarn extra delicate. The beautiful fabric for this particular shawl was woven on a pit handloom by Mr Abid Khan who has two pit looms and will have taken approximately a month to make due to the delicate fibres.

The embroidery was crafted by Mr Hamid Ahmed working in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir. Embroidered by hand in a classic Sozni style and will have taken more 4-5 months to complete.

The shawl was finished at the 'finishing plant' in Hawal by Mr Zakir Wani, where the fabric was carefully washed and finished and ready for dispatch in January 2023.

The shawl will be supplied with a book entitled 'The Kashmir Shawl', which will create a backdrop for you of the 'landscape and lives' where these shawls are created.
